Computing Anywhere

What is meant by a netbook?
The term netbook is the classification for a variety of small, low-power mobile personal computers (PCs) used primarily for e-mail and Internet access.

Which netbook, if any would suit your needs? Explain.

Samsung NC110
This netbook comes in third on "the best netbook" list. This would suit my needs because:
  • it has a simple, nice looking appeal
  • it is at a good price compared to the others
  • has 250GB worth of hard drive (able to store my videos and music)
  • has 3 USB ports and 1 'sleep and charge' port for mobile phones
  • ethernet, bluetooth 3.0 and wifi connectivity (I connect to the internet often)
  • and has a considerably good battery life for a netbook, lasting for 4 hours and 52 minutes (I would be able to use it for a long time)

What applications does Google docs offer online?
  • Document
  • Presentation
  • Spreadsheet
  • Form
  • Drawing
  • Table (beta)

What advantages do students and teachers find in Google docs?
Google docs is a website where you can create, edit and manage documents, spreadsheets and presentations. As it is online, it can be accessed from any device with internet connection, making it convenient for those who use technology often and for those who forget documents on computers and USBs left at home. It can also be shared between people with different sharing and privacy settings allowing people to work and edit as a group online. Students in particular find it particularly handy in group tasks and teachers are able to monitor their work if they have access.

What is the “cloud” in cloud computing?
The term cloud is used as a metaphor for the Internet, based on the cloud drawing used in the past to represent the telephone network, and later to depict the Internet in computer network diagrams as an abstraction of the underlying infrastructure it represents.

Why would you want you documents stored in the “cloud” (online)?
If connected with the "cloud", documents can be accessed from anywhere, make it efficient for people who are constantly busy going places and need to access their documents on the internet instead of taking a copy of it everywhere with them. Some people use it to connect with other people who need access to the document without having to get a hard copy transferred to them. Others use it to host group work.
